About Us

Since 1990, Camp Cucumber has provided a week-long summer camp in Ontario’s cottage country, to struggling single mothers on social assistance and their children aged 5-13.

The idea for Camp Cucumber emerged as a result of a very successful Christmas dinner, supported by the Red Cross in the Jane-Finch Community, back in 1990.

For many of the families in this community, especially those with single mothers struggling to make ends meet, the camp experience was simply too expensive. Our idea was to provide an opportunity for single mothers and their children to leave their everyday lives behind and enjoy a week together, nestled in the Canadian north.

Today, Camp Cucumber’s success is allowing us to go beyond our original mandate to serve the Jane-Finch Community, and support our families during crisis with legal support and social frameworks.

In the words of one single mother:

"This is the first time my kids and I have experienced sleepover camp, and we all loved it. I wish to express my sincere thanks for providing this opportunity, especially for my children. Thank you so much."
